How is net salary calculated in 2026?
Net salary is what remains after the employee's mandatory social-insurance contributions and taxes are deducted from gross pay. In 2026 the contributions are the earnings-related pension 7.30% (the same for all ages), unemployment insurance 0.89% (ages 18–64) and the health-insurance daily-allowance contribution 0.88% (if annual pay is at least €17,255). Taxes are levied on taxable earned income, which is gross pay minus the income-acquisition deduction (€750), those contributions and the basic deduction. State income tax is progressive (12.64–37.5%), municipal tax and any church tax depend on your municipality, and there is also a 1.10% medical-care contribution and the public-broadcasting tax (2.5% on income above €15,150, capped at €160). Finally, the earned-income credit lowers the tax due, which raises your take-home pay.
What do the deductions from your salary consist of?
First, mandatory social-insurance contributions are withheld: the earnings-related pension contribution (TyEL) 7.30%, the unemployment-insurance contribution 0.89% (ages 18–64) and the health-insurance daily-allowance contribution 0.88% (if annual pay is at least €17,255). These contributions are tax-deductible.
The remaining earned income is taxed: progressive state income tax (2026 schedule 12.64–37.5%), municipal tax (e.g. Helsinki 5.3%, over 8% in many municipalities), the medical-care contribution 1.10% and, if you are a member, church tax. The public-broadcasting (Yle) tax is 2.5% of income above €15,150, capped at €160/year.
Tax is reduced by the earned-income credit (työtulovähennys, up to €3,430, deducted directly from tax) and the basic deduction (perusvähennys, up to €4,265). This is why the effective rate is well below the gross salary level, especially for low and middle earners.
Frequently asked questions
How much of a €3,000 salary do you take home?
About €2,440/month in Helsinki in 2026, with total deductions of roughly 18.7%. The amount varies with your municipality’s tax rate — you keep slightly less in municipalities with higher municipal tax. Work out your own net pay by entering your gross salary and municipality.
What is deducted from salary in 2026?
The pension contribution 7.30%, unemployment-insurance contribution 0.89% (ages 18–64), health-insurance daily-allowance contribution 0.88%, medical-care contribution 1.10%, state income tax, municipal tax, church tax if applicable, and the Yle tax (2.5%, max €160/yr).
What is the tax rate on a €3,000 salary?
Total deductions are about 18.7% in Helsinki (taxes and social-insurance contributions combined). The income-tax withholding rate alone is a little lower, because social-insurance contributions are withheld from the salary separately.
Why is my net pay higher than the tax rate would suggest?
The earned-income credit (up to €3,430) and the basic deduction (up to €4,265) reduce the tax. The earned-income credit is deducted directly from tax, so the effective rate stays well below the marginal rate, especially for middle earners.
Does the municipality affect net pay?
Yes. The municipal tax rate varies by municipality (2026: e.g. Helsinki 5.3%, over 8% in many). The difference can be several tens of euros a month at the same gross salary. You can compare municipalities with the municipality-comparison calculator.
How much does church tax affect pay?
Church tax is 1–2% of taxable income depending on the parish. On a €3,000/month salary it is about €25–30/month. Leaving the church removes this tax but also the right to church services.
