How is net income calculated from salary?
Withholding tax and the employee’s statutory contributions (pension and unemployment insurance) are deducted from the gross salary. What remains is the net salary you take home. The rate depends on annual income, your home municipality, church tax and any deductions.
The net–gross and reverse gross calculators help you see the whole picture, and the marginal-tax calculator shows how much tax is taken from extra income.
What changed in 2026?
The reduced VAT rate fell from 14 to 13.5 percent on 1 January 2026. It covers, among other things, food, restaurant meals and passenger transport. The general rate remains 25.5 percent and the rate on newspapers and magazines is 10 percent. The VAT registration threshold is 20,000 euros of turnover a year.
The employee statutory contributions in 2026 are the earnings-related pension contribution of 7.3 percent, the unemployment insurance contribution of 0.89 percent, and health insurance contributions. These are deducted from the gross salary in addition to withholding tax, and the calculators account for them automatically.
How to choose the right calculator
If you know your gross salary and want your take-home pay, use the gross-to-net calculator. If instead you know the net amount you want, the reverse calculator shows the gross salary needed. When weighing a pay rise, overtime or a bonus, the marginal tax calculator shows how much of the extra income you actually keep.
The holiday pay calculator works out holiday pay (lomapalkka) and the holiday bonus (lomaraha), which under collective agreements is usually 50 percent of the holiday pay. The municipal comparison shows how much your home municipality rate affects annual income, and the YLE tax calculator gives the public broadcasting tax: 2.5 percent of income above 15,150 euros, up to 160 euros a year.
