Car tax calculator 2026

Autovero is a one-time tax paid when a car is first registered in Finland. It is calculated as autovero = taxable value × car-tax rate, where the rate depends on the CO2 emission (WLTP). For example, 150 g/km is 16.8% and 200 g/km is 29.7%. Fully electric and hydrogen cars pay 0% (taken into use on 1.10.2021 or later).

This calculator estimates the car tax from the car’s price and CO2 emission using the 2026 tax table (law 1172/2021, table 1A). The result is indicative — the final taxable value and autovero are confirmed by the Tax Administration.

The calculator is indicative. It computes autovero with the current table 1A (1172/2021), which applies to passenger cars registered today. For a used import, autovero depends on the tax level on the car’s first date of use and on the value set by the Tax Administration, so the result may differ. This is not a tax decision.

How is car tax calculated?

Autovero is a one-time tax paid when a car is first registered in Finland. The formula is autovero = taxable value × car-tax rate. The taxable value is the car’s general retail price in Finland (VAT included), and the rate depends on the CO2 emission (WLTP) via table 1A of law 1172/2021. The lower the emissions, the lower the rate: it ranges from 2.7% (1–4 g/km) to 48.9% (360 g/km or more). Fully electric and hydrogen cars have a rate of 0.

How is car tax determined?

The base of the car tax is the car’s taxable value — its general retail price in Finland, VAT included. For a new car this is effectively the list price; for a used import the Tax Administration sets the value from the market price of an equivalent car in Finland, not from the price paid abroad.

The car-tax rate rises with emissions. In table 1A the lowest rate is 2.7% (CO2 1–4 g/km) and the highest is 48.9% (360 g/km or more). In between, for example, 100 g/km is 6.8%, 120 g/km is 9.5%, 150 g/km is 16.8% and 200 g/km is 29.7%. Even a small emission difference can raise the rate, so check the exact CO2 (WLTP) value on the car’s CoC certificate.

Fully electric and hydrogen cars have a 0% car-tax rate when taken into use on 1.10.2021 or later. An autovero return is still filed in OmaVero, but the amount is zero — the tax decision is needed for registration. For plug-in hybrids, autovero is calculated normally from the CO2 emission, which is typically low.

Autovero is paid only once, at first registration. After that the car is subject to the annual vehicle tax (ajoneuvovero: base tax and driving-power tax), collected by Traficom. Autovero and the annual vehicle tax are separate taxes under separate laws.

Frequently asked questions

How much car tax does a fully electric car pay?

Fully electric and hydrogen cars pay 0% autovero when taken into use on 1.10.2021 or later. This covers both cars registered new in Finland and used electric/hydrogen imports. An autovero return is still filed, but the tax amount is zero.

What is the car-tax formula?

Autovero = taxable value × car-tax rate. The taxable value is the car’s general retail price in Finland (incl. VAT), and the rate is read from the CO2 emission (WLTP) in table 1A. For example, 150 g/km is 16.8% and 200 g/km is 29.7%.

Where do I find the car’s CO2 emission?

The CO2 emission (WLTP) is on the car’s CoC certificate (Certificate of Conformity), the registration document or the manufacturer’s data. Taxation uses the WLTP value. If the car has both WLTP and NEDC values, the lower resulting rate is used.

Is car tax due on a used imported car?

Yes, except for an electric or hydrogen car taken into use on 1.10.2021 or later (0%). The autovero of a used car is calculated from its Finnish market value, which the Tax Administration determines — not from the price paid abroad. The rate follows the tax level on the car’s first date of use.

Is the calculator result binding?

No. The calculator gives an indicative estimate from the price and emission you enter. The binding taxable value and autovero are confirmed by the Tax Administration in the tax decision. You can also request a chargeable advance ruling beforehand.

How does autovero differ from the annual vehicle tax?

Autovero is a one-time tax paid only once, at the car’s first registration. The annual vehicle tax (ajoneuvovero) is paid every year while the car is in use and is collected by Traficom. They are separate taxes under separate laws.
