Flight delay compensation calculator (EU 261)
Under EU Regulation 261/2004 you are owed fixed compensation when you reach your final destination three hours or more late, when your flight is cancelled less than 14 days before departure, or when you are denied boarding because of overbooking. The compensation is €250, €400 or €600 depending on distance, and the ticket price makes no difference.
Example: Helsinki to Gran Canaria is 4,696 kilometres, but the flight is within the EU, so the compensation is €400. Helsinki to Bangkok is 7,908 kilometres, and a delay of four hours or more pays €600. If the delay is between three and four hours, the airline may halve it to €300.

If the airline relies on extraordinary circumstances, it has to prove them.
When departure is delayed by 3 hours or more, the airline must provide meals and refreshments and, if needed, a hotel and transport. With a delay of five hours or more you may give up the journey and get the ticket price back.
Claim yourself or through a service?
| Claiming from the airline yourself | €400 |
| Through a claims service, 35% fee | €260 |
| If legal action is needed, 45% fee | €220 |
You can claim fixed compensation yourself, free of charge, on the airline's form. The fees are Compensair's published rates (checked 5 October 2026). A service helps when the airline does not answer or refuses without good reason.
How to claim
- Fill in the airline's claim form and attach your booking confirmation and receipts.
- Claim soon. Finland's Consumer Disputes Board (Kuluttajariitalautakunta) considers a claim made within five months of the flight to be usually still in time.
- If the airline refuses or does not answer, contact Finnish consumer advice (kuluttajaneuvonta). The Consumer Disputes Board handles the case if the disruption happened in Finland, or if a flight from outside the EU was bound for Finland.
- If the disruption happened in another EU country, that country's authority handles the case.
The reform of Regulation 261/2004, Regulation (EU) 2026/2202, applies from 23 October 2027. The amounts stay the same, but compensation must then be claimed within nine months of departure.
The calculator applies EU Regulation 261/2004 and EU Court of Justice case law as they stand on 5 October 2026. It does not decide an individual case: the airline may rely on extraordinary circumstances, and a dispute is handled by the Consumer Disputes Board or a court. Distances are calculated from airport coordinates along the great circle.

How the compensation is worked out
The amount depends on the distance, measured along the great circle from your departure airport to your final destination. Flights up to 1,500 km pay €250. Intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km pay €400, and all other flights €600. For a delay, compensation is due when you reach your final destination three hours or more late. On flights over 3,500 km it may be halved if the delay is under four hours. For a cancellation, compensation is due when you were told less than 14 days before departure, unless the alternative flight left and arrived close to the original times. If the alternative flight arrived no more than two, three or four hours late depending on distance, compensation may be halved.
Delays, cancellations and extraordinary circumstances
A delay is measured at your final destination. If you changed planes and missed your connection, what counts is how late you reached the last stop. Compensation follows the distance between your departure airport and your final destination, not the combined length of the legs. Arrival time is when the first aircraft door is opened.
For a cancellation you get compensation if you were told less than 14 days before departure, unless the alternative flight the airline offered left and arrived close to the original times. If the alternative flight arrived no more than two, three or four hours late depending on distance, the compensation may be halved. If you do not want an alternative flight, the ticket price must be refunded within seven days.
The airline need not pay if it proves the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Under EU Court of Justice case law, a technical fault found during maintenance, a crew member falling ill suddenly or a strike by the airline's own staff is not such a circumstance. If you are denied boarding because of overbooking, the airline cannot rely on extraordinary circumstances.
The regulation covers every flight departing from an EU country, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland. Flights into these countries are covered only when a European airline operates them. The United Kingdom is no longer in the EU: a flight from London to Helsinki on a British airline is not covered, but a flight from Helsinki to London is.
While you wait, the airline must provide meals and refreshments and, if needed, a hotel and transport, even when no fixed compensation is due. These rights and the ticket refund are separate from fixed compensation, and you can claim them at the same time.
Fixed compensation by distance
| Flight | Compensation | Halved |
|---|---|---|
| up to 1,500 km | €250 | €125 |
| intra-EU, over 1,500 km | €400 | €200 |
| other, 1,500–3,500 km | €400 | €200 |
| other, over 3,500 km | €600 | €300 |
The halved amount applies to an alternative flight arriving no more than 2, 3 or 4 hours late, and to a delay of under four hours on flights over 3,500 km.
When a cancellation pays nothing
| You were told | No compensation if the alternative flight |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more before departure | no compensation at all |
| 7 to 14 days before departure | leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and arrives less than 4 hours late |
| less than 7 days before departure | leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and arrives less than 2 hours late |

| Copenhagen | 892 km | intra-EU | €250 |
| London, Heathrow | 1,848 km | outside the EU | €400 |

| New York, JFK | 6,607 km | outside the EU | €600 |
| Bangkok | 7,908 km | outside the EU | €600 |
Does the reason release the airline from paying?
| Reason | Releases the airline |
|---|---|
| Technical fault found during maintenance or caused by poor maintenance | no |
| A crew member falling ill suddenly | no |
| Strike by the airline's own staff over pay or working conditions | no |
| Overbooking | never |
| Bad weather that prevents the flight | usually yes |
| Air traffic control decision or air traffic controllers' strike | usually yes |
| Strike by airport staff | usually yes |
| Bird strike or a foreign object on the runway | usually yes |
| A passenger's illness or disruptive behaviour | usually yes |
| Security risk or political instability | usually yes |
"Usually yes" means the airline must still show the disruption could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
Flight compensation: frequently asked questions
How much compensation do I get for a delayed flight?
If you reach your final destination three hours or more late, you get €250 for a flight up to 1,500 km, €400 for an intra-EU flight over 1,500 km or another flight of 1,500 to 3,500 km, and €600 for a longer flight. On flights over 3,500 km the amount may be cut to €300 if the delay is under four hours. The ticket price makes no difference.
How long does a flight have to be delayed for compensation?
At least three hours at your final destination. Arrival time is when the first aircraft door is opened. A late departure does not count on its own if the plane makes up time and you arrive less than three hours late. The airline must still provide meals and refreshments once departure is two, three or four hours late, depending on distance.
Do I get compensation if my flight was cancelled?
Yes, if you were told less than 14 days before departure. No compensation is due if, 7 to 14 days before departure, the airline offered a flight leaving no more than two hours earlier and arriving less than four hours late, or, less than 7 days before, a flight leaving no more than an hour earlier and arriving less than two hours late. You can always get the ticket price back within seven days if you do not want an alternative flight.
Which reasons release the airline from paying?
Only extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. These usually include bad weather, air traffic control decisions, strikes by airport or air traffic control staff, bird strikes and security risks. Under EU Court of Justice case law, a technical fault found during maintenance, a crew member's illness or a strike by the airline's own staff is not an extraordinary circumstance. The airline has to prove the cause.
Does the regulation cover flights from outside the EU?
It covers every flight departing from an EU country, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, whatever the airline. Flights into these countries are covered only when a European airline operates them. A flight from Antalya to Helsinki on a Turkish airline is therefore not covered, but the same flight on Finnair is.
How do I claim, and by when?
Fill in the airline's claim form and attach your booking confirmation. Claim soon: Finland's Consumer Disputes Board considers a claim made within five months of the flight to be usually still in time. If the airline refuses, contact Finnish consumer advice (kuluttajaneuvonta). Once the reform of the regulation applies from 23 October 2027, compensation must be claimed within nine months of departure.
Is it worth using a claims service?
You can claim yourself for free and keep the whole amount. A claims service handles the claim for you and keeps part of the compensation: Compensair, for example, charges 35%, plus 10% if legal action is needed. Out of €400 you would receive €260 through the service. It helps when the airline does not answer or refuses without good reason.
What must the airline provide while I wait?
When departure is delayed by two, three or four hours depending on distance, the airline must provide meals and refreshments and the chance to make two phone calls or send two emails. If departure moves to the next day, it must arrange a hotel and transport. With a delay of five hours or more you may give up the journey and get the ticket price back.
Do I get compensation if I missed a connecting flight?
Yes, if the flights were on a single booking. What counts is how late you reached your final destination, and the amount depends on the distance from your departure airport to that destination. If you departed from the EU area, the regulation covers the whole journey even if the disruption happened outside the EU.
Are air passenger rights changing?
Yes. Regulation (EU) 2026/2202 was published on 2 October 2026 and applies from 23 October 2027. The amounts of €250, €400 and €600 and the three-hour threshold stay, but compensation may then be halved only on flights over 3,500 km when the delay is four hours or less. Claims must be made within nine months, and the airline must pay or explain a refusal within 30 days.
