Partial early old-age pension calculator 2026
The partial early old-age pension (OVE) is a flexible way to start drawing a pension before the actual old-age pension age. You can draw 25 % or 50 % of your accrued earnings-related pension and keep working freely at the same time. This calculator estimates the OVE amount after the early reduction and the life expectancy coefficient.
If you start the pension before your own lowest old-age pension age, a permanent reduction of 0.4 % is applied for each month of early start. For example, from a 2,200 euro accrued pension a 50 % share taken 45 months early with a coefficient of 0.94659 gives a pension of 853.82 euros a month. The result is indicative.

Your pension accrued by the end of the previous year. You can see it in the Omat eläketietosi service.
You can take 25 % or 50 %. If you take 25 % first, you can later raise it to 50 %.
How many months before your own lowest old-age pension age you start. At most 36 months.
The coefficient set for your birth year (e.g. 0.946). It reduces the pension permanently.
OVE per month
€855/ kk
An estimate of the partial old-age pension paid.
| Share taken | €1,000.00 |
| Early reduction | 9.6 % |
| Reduction amount | −€96.00 |
| After reduction | €904.00 |
| OVE / month (after the coefficient) | €855.18 |
| OVE / year | €10,262.21 |
The calculator is indicative. The exact OVE amount depends on your actual accrued pension, the life expectancy coefficient for your birth year and the start month. The coefficient is worth checking with your own pension provider. See a precise estimate in the OVE calculator of the Omat eläketietosi service before applying.
How is the partial early old-age pension calculated?
As a partial early old-age pension (OVE) you can draw 25 % or 50 % of the earnings-related pension accrued by the end of the previous year. If you start the pension before your own lowest old-age pension age, a permanent early reduction is made to the share taken, at 0.4 % for each month the pension starts before the retirement age. For example, 45 months early means an 18 % reduction. After the early reduction the pension is multiplied by the life expectancy coefficient set for your birth year, which adjusts the pension to the change in life expectancy and lowers it slightly. For example, from a 1,100 euro share a 45-month early start makes a 198 euro reduction, leaving 902 euros; with a coefficient of 0.94659 the final OVE is 853.82 euros a month. The early reduction is permanent and also lowers your final old-age pension. OVE can also be taken after the retirement age, in which case it gets a deferral increase of 0.4 % per deferred month instead of the reduction.
The early reduction, the coefficient and the effects of OVE
The base amount of OVE is 25 % or 50 % of the earnings-related pension accrued by the end of the previous year. You can start with a 25 % share and later raise it to 50 %, but you cannot change it the other way. A person born in 1963 or earlier can take OVE at 61, one born in 1964 at 62, and one born in 1965 or later at the earliest three years before their own lowest old-age pension age.
If you start the pension before your lowest old-age pension age, the share taken gets an early reduction of 0.4 % for each month of early start. The reduction is permanent and does not disappear when you later move to the actual old-age pension. Since OVE can start at most three years before the retirement age, the largest possible reduction is 36 months × 0.4 %, that is 14.4 %.
After the early reduction the pension is multiplied by the life expectancy coefficient, which is set separately for each birth-year cohort. The coefficient is a little below one and reduces the pension permanently, as it adjusts pensions to the rise in expected life expectancy. You can also take OVE after the retirement age; then instead of the reduction you get a deferral increase of 0.4 % for each deferred month.
OVE does not restrict work and has no income limits: you can work full-time, part-time or stop working. Work continues to accrue new pension. However, OVE is taxable pension income, and from 1 May 2026 it is counted as income in Kela’s new yleistuki, which may reduce its amount. It is worth checking your own pension estimate and taxation before applying, since the early reduction also lowers your final old-age pension permanently.
Frequently asked questions
What is the partial early old-age pension?
OVE is a pension where you can draw 25 % or 50 % of your accrued earnings-related pension already before the actual old-age pension age. You can keep working freely alongside it with no income limits, and work continues to accrue more pension normally. Taking the pension does not require reducing your work.
At what age can you take OVE?
For those born in 1963 or earlier the lower age limit is 61, and for those born in 1964 it is 62. Those born in 1965 or later can start OVE at the earliest three years before their own lowest old-age pension age. OVE is not granted retroactively, so apply about a month before the desired start.
How large is the early reduction?
The early reduction is 0.4 % for each month the pension starts before your own lowest old-age pension age. It is permanent and does not disappear when you move to the old-age pension. Since OVE can start at the earliest three years before the retirement age, the largest possible reduction is 36 × 0.4 %, that is 14.4 %.
What is the life expectancy coefficient?
The life expectancy coefficient adjusts pensions to the change in estimated life expectancy. Each birth-year cohort gets its own coefficient, a little below one, which reduces the pension permanently. OVE is multiplied by this coefficient after the early reduction. You can check your own coefficient with your pension provider or in the Omat eläketietosi service.
Does OVE affect other benefits?
OVE does not restrict work and does not reduce earnings-related or sickness daily allowances. However, it is taxable pension income, and from 1 May 2026 OVE is counted as income in Kela’s new yleistuki, which may reduce its amount. OVE also does not create a right to the guarantee pension. Check the effects before applying.
Can the share be changed later?
If you take a 25 % share first, you can later raise it to 50 %. You cannot change it the other way: from 50 % you cannot return to 25 %. If you take 50 % straight away, the share can no longer be changed. A share taken later has the early reduction and coefficient of its own start time applied.
