Retirement age in Finland 2026 — by year of birth

Your lowest old-age retirement age in Finland depends on your year of birth. For someone born in 1961 it is 64 years and 9 months, and for those born in 1962–1964 it is 65 years. For people born in 1965 and later the age is tied to life expectancy and is only confirmed later (the 65 years shown here is the known floor, not yet a confirmed figure).

Pick your year and month of birth — the tool shows your lowest retirement age, the earliest month your pension can begin, the upper insurance age (general retirement age) and the partial old-age pension age.

Your target retirement age (tavoite-eläkeikä) is slightly higher than your lowest age (for someone born in 1961 it is 66). It is a personal age, derived from the life-expectancy coefficient, at which the deferral increment cancels out the coefficient's reduction. Check your own target age in the Työeläke.fi calculator.

When can you retire in 2026?

The lowest old-age retirement age rises under the 2017 pension reform by 3 months per birth cohort, from 63 years (born 1954 and earlier) toward 65 years. For those born in 1962–1964 the lowest age is 65, and for people born in 1965 and later it is tied to life expectancy. You can take the old-age pension once you reach your own lowest retirement age — the pension starts at the earliest from the beginning of the following month. If you keep working past the lowest age, your pension grows in two ways: you get a deferral increment of 0.4% per month and accrue new pension at the same time. The pension does not start automatically — you must claim it, usually about six months before you want it to begin.

Three retirement ages: lowest, upper and partial

The lowest old-age retirement age is the earliest age at which you can take a full old-age pension. The 2017 reform raised it by three months per birth cohort from 63 years (born 1954 and earlier) to 65 years (1962–1964). For those born in 1965 and later the age rises with life expectancy and is confirmed in the year the cohort turns 62.

The upper insurance age (the “general retirement age”) is the age up to which work accrues pension: 68 years for those born in 1957 and earlier, 69 years for cohorts 1958–1961 and 70 years for those born in 1962 and later. The partial old-age pension (OVE) can start earlier: at 61 for those born in 1963 and earlier and at 62 for those born in 1964 and later.

You do not have to retire right at the lowest age. If you keep working past it, you earn a deferral increment of 0.4% for each postponed month and accrue new pension at the same time — see the pension-forecast calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is my retirement age by year of birth?

For those born in 1961 the lowest age is 64y 9m, and for 1962–1964 it is 65y. For those born in 1965 and later the age is tied to life expectancy (known floor 65y). Pick the year and month in the calculator.

What is the upper insurance age?

The age up to which work accrues earnings-related pension: 68y (1957 and earlier), 69y (1958–1961) and 70y (1962 and later). It is also called the general retirement age.

When can I start a partial old-age pension?

The lower age for the partial old-age pension (OVE) is 61 for those born in 1963 and earlier and 62 for those born in 1964 and later. It lets you draw 25% or 50% of your accrued pension before the actual retirement age.

Is it worth retiring right at the lowest age?

Not necessarily. Each postponed month raises the pension by 0.4% (the deferral increment), and by continuing to work you accrue additional pension. On the other hand, the pension is then paid for a shorter time.

Why is the age for those born after 1965 uncertain?

Because it is tied to life expectancy. The age is confirmed in the year the cohort turns 62, so for younger people the current 65 years is only the known floor.
