Child benefit (lapsilisä) is a tax-free, income-independent payment Kela makes for every child under 17. In 2026 it is €94.88/mo for the first child and €104.84/mo for the second — about €199.72/mo for two children.

The amounts are for mainland Finland in 2026 (the same as 2025). The benefit is tax-free and does not depend on family income. Åland finances its own child benefit at higher rates. The single-parent supplement is paid if you are not married or cohabiting and live separately from your former partner (joint custody does not prevent it). The benefit is paid for a child living permanently in Finland and must be applied for from Kela (OmaKela). This calculator is indicative.
How is child benefit calculated?
Child benefit is paid for every child under 17 living permanently in Finland, and the base amount rises with birth order: €94.88 for the first child, €104.84 for the second, €133.79 for the third, €173.24 for the fourth, and €192.69 per month for the fifth and each subsequent child. Each child under 3 adds a further €26 per month. A single parent receives a €73.30 supplement for every eligible child. All amounts are added together to give the family's monthly child benefit. The benefit is tax-free.

A €26.00/mo supplement is paid for each child under 3, and a €73.30/mo single-parent supplement per child. Child benefit is tax-free and does not depend on the family's income or assets. It is paid in mainland Finland; Åland has its own, higher rates.
Child benefit is paid until the end of the month in which the child turns 17. It is claimed from Kela and normally paid to the child's guardian.
