Retirement age by birth year in Finland 2026

The lowest old-age retirement age depends on your birth year. For someone born in 1961 it is 64 years 9 months, and for those born in 1962–1964 it is 65 years. For people born in 1965 and later the age is tied to life expectancy, so 65 years is the known floor rather than a confirmed figure.

The 2017 reform raised the lowest retirement age by three months per birth cohort. Below is a table by birth year plus three different ages: the lowest old-age age, the upper age limit for insurance and the lower age for the partial old-age pension.

Three retirement ages: lowest, upper and partial

The upper age limit for the insurance obligation (the “general retirement age”) is the age up to which work accrues pension: 68 for those born 1957 and earlier, 69 for cohorts 1958–1961 and 70 for those born 1962 and later. The partial old-age pension (OVE) can start earlier: at 61 for those born 1963 and earlier, at 62 for those born 1964 and later.

You do not have to retire at the lowest age. If you keep working beyond it, you receive a deferral increase of 0.4% for every postponed month and accrue new pension at the same time.

FAQ

What is my retirement age by birth year?

For example, someone born in 1961 has a lowest age of 64y 9m, and those born 1962–1964 have 65y. For those born 1965 and later the age is tied to life expectancy (known floor 65y).

What is the upper age limit for insurance?

The age up to which work accrues earnings-related pension: 68y (1957 and earlier), 69y (1958–1961) and 70y (1962 and later). It is also called the general retirement age.

When can I start the partial old-age pension?

The lower age for the partial old-age pension (OVE) is 61 for those born 1963 and earlier and 62 for those born 1964 and later. In it you can draw 25% or 50% of your accrued pension before the actual retirement age.

Is it worth retiring at the lowest age?

It is not mandatory. Each postponed month raises the pension by 0.4% (deferral increase), and by continuing to work you also accrue new pension. On the other hand, the pension is then paid for a shorter time.

Why is the age for those born after 1965 not certain?

Because it is tied to life expectancy. The age is confirmed in the year the cohort turns 62, so for younger people the current 65 years is only a known floor.
